Featured Etsy Seller - Renewed Upon A Dream

This month’s featured Etsy seller is the amazing and talented artist behind Renewed Upon A Dream ( Read about her life and art here, then visit her Etsy shop to see all of her beautiful hardbound creations. :)

Tell us a little about yourself

Hello! I'm Sarah. I'm here in Michigan dealing with our two seasons (winter & construction) while developing my Etsy business. I live with my pediatric resident husband & our dog Mojo in a fabulous little condo. I love my Etsy shop in which I sell my handbound books & journals. I also love all kinds of other crafts as well, particularly building & refinishing furniture & crocheting.

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?

Handbound books. I use a variety of methods to bind books in many different sizes, using beautiful materials.

How did you get started in your line of business?

I've been creating books for as long as I can remember for myself, but I got serious about bookbinding about a year ago.

Describe your creative process

I usually will have a picture in my head of what I want to create before I purchase a new material. I love window shopping for cover papers & leathers. When I find something that I'm drawn to, I get really excited to get it home to get to work right away!

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am often inspired by color. I will find a new pretty paper or a new color of leather & be inspired to create something new. I also am inspired by clothing and fabric, I love lace, which I found a way to include in my products. I really like girly colors like pink peach & purple, but I love browns & neutrals for when I'm thinking about making a product for guys.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

Right now it is this suede notebook ( But this one is one of a kind because I made it with some leftover suede pieces. I'll probably be jealous of whoever gets it :)

How do you promote your work?

I purchase about 1 ad per month on a popular blog I like. I like to choose a new blog every month so that my product is viewed by different audiences. I also have giveaways sometimes on other blogs & also on my own ( I have an email list & I send shop updates to those on the list every couple of weeks or so (you can sign up at & get a coupon code for free shipping!) I also have started selling my work at various craft shows & become more known locally. I also have a twitter account (@RUaDSarah) and facebook (

What is one of the most important lessons you’ve learned since starting your business?

Don't put too much money into something you don't know will be successful. For example, I have a new idea for a type of book for my shop. Instead of offering it in 20 different sizes & styles, I'll be offering it for the first season in 2 sizes, with 6 cover styles. This way, I can see if there is a market for that product & what people are liking before buying a ton of materials that I may end up not using.

What advice would you give someone, like you, who is just starting out?

Try to have really great photos. Photos are so important. So much so that you're going to see this advice all the time. Also, I think it's best to have a good number of products ready when you open your shop. Probably at least 25 or so if you can. It just makes you more visible and look like a serious seller.

What are your other sites (facebook, twitter, blog, etc.)?

Book Review - Pinterest Savvy: How I Got 1 Million + Followers

Are you using all the social media tools available to you to grow your business? Well, here's one I missed. I just finished reading Pinterest Savvy. It's short and sweet, but it packs a real punch in terms of ideas, tips and examples for how to use Pinterest more effectively to drive traffic to your website. If you are looking for ways to boost your Pinterest account, this is the book for you. If you are new to Pinterest, this is the book for you. You can buy the Kindle version on Amazon for less than $5.

Now. The down-side. Not to the book, but because we're Etsymoms and our businesses are on Etsy: Pinterest and Etsy have not yet worked out a way to verify our shop links so that the link to our shops can be on our profile on Pinterest. This is explained in the book - so read it! We can do something about that. We need to politely send a message to Etsy, asking them to please find a way to help us verify our shop links on Pinterest. Or, if you're super tech savvy, maybe you can think of a way to make it work and suggest it to them. You will see that there is a tiny little Etsy discussion thread on subject of verifying etsy address. We aren't the only ones wondering about this.

If you decide to read the book, here's one more thing you should know. The author is hosting a giveaway. If you read and review the book and do a couple other things, you can be entered to win a Kindle Fire. Drop by Imagination Soup to learn more about it.

The Treasure Hunt is On!
