Featured Etsy Seller - Rebecca Wales Frock Shop

Get an early start to your holiday shopping by visiting our featured Etsy seller for November. Rebecca Wales Frock Shop is a virtual treasure trove of unique handmade and vintage clothing and accessories.

Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated with a degree in fashion in 2011 and I am currently an Assistant Couture designer at Elizabeth Bessant London, where we create outfits for Bridal, Mother of the Bride and Special Occasion. Aside from this, I also work freelance and have created outfits such as prom and bridal dresses. However, my dream is to have my own shop so I thought what better way to start it than on Etsy.

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?
Handmade vintage style/inspired clothing and accessories, along with vintage clothing and accessories as well.

How did you get started in your line of business?
I started to create garments and accessories with a vintage feel, when my Nan and Grandma gave me everything they had to do with dressmaking, from vintage patterns and fabrics to vintage spools and buttons. Both of them used to make all their own clothes as well as for their families. So, when they both suggested that they may be throwing out all these amazing things, I jumped at the chance to give them a new life. I found that rummaging through all the bits they had kept was that not only have they been very thrifty and creative over the years, but also extremely stylish!

Describe your creative process
I collect a lot of things whether it is fabrics, patterns or trimmings. I tend to pick things up wherever I go, charity shops, vintage fairs. So, I have ended up with areas in my house where I keep my bits and bobs, wool, buttons, patterns etc. When I feel creative, I pick through everything and see what I can create, i.e when I designed my hand knitted ruffle collars, I found some vintage wool I had (which were odd bits) and just started to knit. After a few sessions of random knitting, I came up with the collar design. A lot of my creativity comes when I am with my Mum. We tend to get together and bounce ideas off each other and just spend the day knitting or sewing.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I adore vintage whether it is fashion or for the home and it is my main inspiration. However, I get a lot of inspiration from people and how different people put items together in different ways. I also watch a lot of TV and Film which are set in bygone eras. I tend to get lots of inspiration from all the different costumes.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

I love my 1960s Rolled collar shift dress. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the shape I love. Audrey Hepburn is one of my major fashion icons and I love that shape collar on her. Also, I brought the fabric at a vintage fair. It has been my most favorite piece of fabric I have come across in a long time. It is vintage and it lent itself to this dress very well!

How do you promote your work?
I promote my work through facebook, twitter, my website and word of mouth. I am having my first stall at a fair this Christmas which I feel will be a great way to get feedback and promote my work in my local area.

What is one of your most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?
To network, on Etsy, facebook, wherever you can, I don’t believe you can just hope someone will stumble on over to your page, especially in the beginning anyway!

What advice would you give someone just starting out?
To be patient and it is not as easy as it looks. There is no point in cutting corners to save time. Do it properly the first time around and love it! Finally, persevere with something whether it is your product or the photos of your products. Do it until you are 100% happy. You are more likely to promote something if you love it. At the end of the day, we all do this because we enjoy it. Don’t lose your spark when things aren’t going so good. Keep going and you’ll get there!

What are your other sites (facebook, twitter, blog, etc.)?
