This is a great way to promote what you're working on and to learn what others are working on. Every once in a while, we'll have a theme - pay attention to the themes! We'll give you advanced notice when a themed linky will be going up so you can prepare for it.

Featured Etsy Seller - Pretty Zombie Girl

For October, the month of halloween, our featured seller is the artist behind Pretty Zombie Girl. Be sure to visit her shop on Etsy to see all her unique handmade oddities.

Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a mother of a 5-year-old daughter named Zoe who loves to create & craft just as much as I do! I'm very into horror movies (especially old zombie flicks) and weird occult or nostalgic things which is why I started my Etsy shop. When I'm not busy with my projects, I co-own and operate a brick & mortar handmade/vintage/art shop in my hometown of New Albany, IN called "The Dandy Lion".

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?
I create/offer weird occult trinkets, horror-themed handmade items, and eccentric vintage treasures.

How did you get started in your line of business?
I first got started selling vintage clothing & accessories with my best friend in an online store on eBay called "ThatVintageGreen" back in 2004/2005.

Describe your creative process
Basically, I see cool jewelry/art supplies in stores or online that stand out to me in some way and I think about what I can do with those supplies whether they be pendant settings or blank flasks. From there I take something from my childhood, usually TV shows or movies, and play around with ideas to create an accessory or collectible that I like as well as what I think others will enjoy.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere, but mainly from nostalgic TV, books, & movies. I'm fascinated with the unknown and things that scare me and with the internet being so expansive now there seems to be an endless supply of creative inspiration.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?
Probably my zodiac hemp bracelets.

How do you promote your work?
I promote my work locally in my store "The Dandy Lion", but online I have a website & blog (prettyzombiegirl.com) as well as other social media accounts. I try to post on all of them as much as possible without excessively bothering my followers. haha!

What is one of your most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?
The consumer market is so fickle. Sometimes, I make something and I'm like, "YES! This is brilliant! I know everyone will love it!" And that particular item never gains popularity while something else I make that I'm not quite as stoked about will sell like hot cakes. You just never know, but don't let your fave products not selling bring down your creative mood.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?
Don't give up if you don't have as many sales or favorites as other shops. It takes time to build a following and a lot of hard work to keep up an Etsy shop. Keep making, listing, posting, & promoting because eventually you'll get to where you want to be!

Marvelous Mom! Meet Crystal Cortes of Crystal's Creations

 Tell us about yourself!

My name is Crystal; I am a mother of a beautiful 6 year old daughter. I am a full time mom, special needs caregiver, member of PTA , and I own Crystal’s Creations! I love it all.

What makes you unique?

What makes me unique is that I am who I am. I am a goofball, random, I LOVE MONKEY items, but I am serious and a huge jokester. Joking around and being sarcastic are what makes my days better.

What do you love about kids?

Kids show me how much I have grown and forgotten things, like how to stop and smell the roses, or how to be excited about animals, flowers, airplanes. They show me to appreciate things I have forgotten and to remember that life is too short. Kids are so innocent, and they see everything for the first time through fresh eyes, I think that’s my favorite part.

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?

I maintain Crystal’s Creations, Help with  EtsyMom blog, Help with EtsyMom events, Help assist my daughter’s PTA, I blog, I make makeup videos, and throw parties, and work as an Independent Consultant for Origami Owl.

What is the link to your etsy shop?

https://www.etsy.com/shop/Crystals7Creations

What do you offer in your etsy shop?

In my Etsy shop, I like to have bows, headbands, flower clips and accessories made by hand to showcase.

Where do you create?

I craft in my garage , I have turned it into a craft headquarters for all I do.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration in looking at things around the store, in a magazine, or by staring at random scraps to inspire a spark.

How did you get started in your current line of business?

I started crafting at 3 with my mom, so I have been doing craft fairs since forever. Although, I started my business by my daughter asking for me to buy her bows, princess ones to be exact. I said ok, until I saw the price - $8.50????? For two 3 inch hair bows??? We left, went to Michaels, bought ribbon and I learned so I can always make her bows.

How do you promote your business?

I promote by word of mouth, status updates, events, and Instagram posts, using hash tags and so forth. It’s free, and I make sure to make time to post everyday to one networking page at least!

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?

I have learned people will always have something to say, but you have to believe in your own work and know you did your best!

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

I would say, watermark all pictures and work prior to posting them. Do not pay any networking page to advertise when there are plenty of other options for free advertisement. And always give your business at least 1 hour a day if you work full time, or are busy. Because no matter how exhausted you are, if you’re not consistent in your community then how are people going to trust you to be consistent with products.

What are some of your favorite online shops, both etsy and non-etsy?

I like Etsy, Store Envy, Wix for webpages and Ebay. However I stay with Store Envy and Etsy, they are both easy to maneuver and easy to upload and maintain.
